What we do

Clinical practice guidelines

Since 1989, the College has produced more than 100 evidence-based guidelines covering almost 80% of conditions presented in primary care. The guidelines are regularly updated and modified based on recent developments.

Position papers

The College produces various strategic papers in order to support and to strengthen primary care.

The Vision for the Future of General Practice Care 2022 is a strategic plan jointly drafted by the Dutch General Practitioner's Association (LHV) and the Dutch College of General Practioners (NHG).

Educational support for GPs

The College develops educational tools and eLearning programs for General Practitioners and their staff based on the guidelines. By offering these educational tools, we support practicing GPs in demonstrating appropriate and continuing professional development. These educational tools are available for GPs still in training (Aios) as well.

Website Thuisarts.nl

In 2011, the College launched a website for the general public – Thuisarts.nl – sharing evidence-based health information. With this information patients can prepare themselves for their GP appointment. On the other hand, GPs themselves can use this information to explain certain issues to their patients in plain language.

The information provided on this website is independent and does not include any advertisements from the pharmaceutical industry.

Dutch scientific journal for GPs

The College publishes a monthly scientific journal – Huisarts en Wetenschap (in Dutch only) – which contains original scientific articles, guidelines, educational papers and news from the College.

NHG Practice accreditation

The College in involved in practice accreditation according to quality criteria covering medical performance, practice organization and patient satisfaction. However, the NPA (in Dutch only), the organization actually responsible for practice accreditation, operates independent from the NHG and the other organizations involved.
